Coronary heart disease is the term used to describe the build-up of fatty deposits in the wall of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle resulting in coronary plaques.
This can build up slowly over time and start to obstruct the flow of blood to the heart muscle and may result in symptoms of chest pain on breathlessness on exercise.
These plaques can also suddenly rupture causing an abrupt occlusion of a coronary artery resulting in a heart attack. For this reason, 50% of patients who have heart attacks would never have had symptoms beforehand.
Coronary disease can be caused by lifestyle factors, such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Patients with hypertension, diabetes and a family history of heart disease are also at greater risk.
Monitoring at any stage of coronary disease can help tailor treatment and identify potential complications early on and before the progression of disease causes potential deterioration in symptoms.
