Permanent Pacemaker (PPM) or Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
Patients with a permanent pacemaker (PPM) or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) need to have the device checked at regular intervals to ensure that there is adequate remaining battery life and that the device is functioning appropriately.
Checks are usually performed annually after the initial check 4-6 weeks after implantation. These devices can also store a history of any abnormal cardiac rhythms which can also be interrogated during the check. Treatment can then be appropriately modified to treat any such arrhythmias.
A technician uses a programmer to check the pacemaker. This is typically a laptop-sized device housed in a briefcase. A “wand” is placed over the pacemaker which provides the following information:
- Detects battery life thereby giving the cardiologist an idea when the generator needs to be replaced,
- Checks the ability of the pacemaker to sense the heart rhythm
- Ascertains the health (threshold) of the implanted pacing leads
- Detects any abnormal heart rhythms.
The programmer can also alter the pacemaker settings if needed to optimise its function.
