Checks are usually performed annually after the initial check 4-6 weeks after implantation. These devices can also store a history of any abnormal cardiac rhythms which can also be interrogated during the check. Treatment can then be appropriately modified to treat any such arrhythmias.
A technician uses a programmer to check the pacemaker. This is typically a laptop-sized device housed in a briefcase. A “wand” is placed over the pacemaker which provides the following information:
